Sarnath is the birth place of Buddhism, where Shakyamuni Buddha first time communicated his experience of supreme perfect Enlightenment to the humankind in the Deer Park, setting the wheel of the Dharma in motion. Ashoka, the Mauryan Emperor came after about two hundred years of the Nirvana of Buddha. He raised several monuments at Sarnath including Dhammarajika Stupa which was 30.4 meter high and the monolithic pillar which was once surmounted by the magnificent lion-capital, now adopted by India as her state emblem and placed in local Archiological museum. The capital was crowned by a large Dhammachakra of which several fragments were recovered. The 34 meter high Dhammekh stupa is the most remarkable structure as it is believed to mark the spot where the Buddha preached his first sermon. The modern Mahabodhi Society temple ‘Mulgandh Kuti Vihar’ has a series of brilliant frescos by the Japanese artist Kosetsu Nosi and a life size gilded golden statue of the Buddha.
Sarnath is situated 10Kms north-east the city of Varanasi. Easy access and well connected to Delhi, Kolkata, Nagpur, Mumbai and Kathmandu by road, rail and air. All the Buddhist holy sites are within a radius of 330 Km. We have a plot of land close to Dhammekh stupa and Mulgandhkuti Vihara on Dharmapala Road.
Today the modern pilgrim will find Sarnath, with its well-kept gardens and its deer park , one of the most peaceful and pleasant of all Buddhist sites in India .
